belong - behave - believe

The world as "we" (Modern West) have known it for the past couple hundred years has operated in a pretty similar pattern for most Groups:

believe - behave - belong

my experience is mainly with the Church & specific churches, but i am speaking more broadly about groups in all parts of our culture.

this is generally the way things have worked when you are going to be a part of some group or organization. DEFINITELY this is the way it has worked in churches.

if you want to be a part of "us", 1st you need to BELIEVE. you need to believe what we believe. that comes 1st.
specifically in churches, you need to believe in Jesus. you need to believe that and maybe even some other important doctrines before you can even begin to THINK about belonging to our group.

This couldn't possibly be any clearer as most churches pretty much straight up say, if you want to be a member of our church you must 1st BELIEVE. that's the very minimum requirement.

but really there was another step in this system in Modernity. you couldn't just believe and then you belonged... really you had to BEHAVE before you could belong.

you need to act, dress, talk, walk, understand, fit in, and generally BEHAVE like the rest of the in group BEFORE you could be "in." before you could truly belong.

anyone alive who has ever been a part of a church knows this. this is just how it works in the Modern religious world. you don't truly belong unless you behave a certain way - like all the rest of us. then we'll let you belong.

<*MAYBE some in the Modern Church would argue it was more like "believe - belong - behave." in that a person was truly accepted into belonging after they believed something and then they could take their time in learning to behave. i respectfully disagree.>

but once you finally make it... once you finally believe the right stuff & then behave the right way... You're in! you're finally in. you belong now. and you also become one of the "in crowd" to forever perpetuate this system.

i happen to think that's all pretty jacked up.

especially because it perpetuates forever. that is, as long as Modernity sticks around as the dominant way the world operates.

but things are changing. some would say they've already changed... there are just Modernity's fragments hanging on in corners of the Western world. but no doubt, postmodernity is coming.

and postmodernity doesn't quite embrace INDIVIDUALISM the way that Modernity did. the individual will not be king in this new world. there will be a huge priority on BELONGING.

in that old system of believe - behave - belong someone maybe wanted to belong, but there were just too many barriers.
the world will necessarily change though.

this is what the new system will be (if it hasn't changed already when we weren't looking)  :

belong - behave - believe

yep. exactly the opposite.
when someone wants to be a part of some group in this new world - they will simply be welcomed. the group, organization, or whatever will welcome them in.

then eventually they'll start to "behave" - look, act, dress, talk, etc... like everyone else in the group. & eventually, they will believe. believe that certain things are important - the same things that the rest of the group believes are important.

then they're "in." but they felt "in" long ago... because they belonged.
and being able to first belong actually ENABLED them to then behave and believe!

the Church will follow suit. no longer will you need to behave and believe a certain way to "belong" to a community in a local church. you will be welcomed with open arms and you will BELONG simply because you are. simply because you are curious, or because you have a desire to "belong" in community.

the beautiful thing is that this new way of the world will enable TONS of "outsiders"... people who don't believe and behave like Christians in the church to BELONG first. slowly, they'll begin to see that the way the others in this community are behaving is very attractive. it appeals to them. this Jesus way of life actually appears to be a better way to live. and they'll start to follow suit.

and then... yep, you guessed it - they will believe. it will be real. it will be personal. Jesus will capture their heart and be their Savior.

too bad the Church didn't figure this out 300 years ago. because Jesus made it pretty clear.
and even before Jesus ever showed up, God, in the Old Testament chose a people & simply asked them to "join" Him. be a part of His movement. just follow Him. it wasn't until after they did that that most of them believed.
And Jesus' example - when He called each of His apostles... He just said "come follow Me." just be a part of what i'm doing. come join me. yeah, you can belong.

how preposterous! Jesus didn't even ask them what they believed 1st? whoa.
slowly they're behavior all changed and started to be more and more like Jesus. they saw that it was way better that way.
and it wasn't until way way later that Jesus finally asks them - what do you believe? or "who do YOU say that I am?" & Peter says "You are the Messiah... the Anointed One... the Son of God!"

YES!

it's hard to know that you can believe until you belong.

that's why i love being a part of Ridge Church. one of our mantras... one of the things we set out to do with this thing we call Ridge is to create a place, a church, a community where people can belong BEFORE they believe. and it's happening.
i wrote a lot about that with Ridge specifically HERE.

so, i'm thankful that postmodernism will actually force our churches to change. but i'm even more thankful that Ridge has been doing this from day 1. i'll end this post with an echo of the words i wrote in that post about this a few years ago...

"i want to be a part of the place where people have no problem belonging way before they believe. a church FULL of peeps who are walking with us, hanging out with us, before they even know what they fully think about God. that's beautiful.
that's what i signed up for."

vision casting that makes you want to paint your face blue

vision casting is essential for any leader of any movement.

vision casters have this crazy burning passion for the world to be different and they actually have a clear picture of how the world could be and should be... and they paint this picture for others to see & invite them to be a part of.

every time i watch Braveheart i am blown away by the vision casting skill of William Wallace. there are tons of examples throughout the movie, but here's a brief one:

every single time i hear his vision casting speeches like this one it makes me wanna stand up, pump my fist, & sign up to go fight in the Scottish army.

and i'm not even Scottish.

but i'm like "Give me a sword and some blue face paint and let's go!"

that's what a powerful vision caster can do. they can spark something in the hearts of people. they can paint a picture of a preferred reality that's so clear it compels people to rise up for the cause.

i want to be a vision caster half as good as William Wallace.

happy LEAP DAY!

can you remember from like 4th grade Science class why it's Leap Day today?

well, here's a fun little reminder + probably some stuff you didn't know.

hopefully that wasn't boring for you.
now you will be ready to explain it to anyone who asks today.

no wikipedia

Wikipedia - the source of all things true, historical, and reliable - was unavailable yesterday.
They were offline for 24 hours - January 18th.

according to "Wikipedia" itself it shut down for this reason: "Opposing SOPA and PIPA, two controversial Intellectual Property Laws in the Unized States, the BlackDown attempts to demonstrate what government instrumentalized control of the Internet can cause - a controlled shutdown of websites delivering content a current government may not be pleased with."

Thankfully at midnight last night it came back.
how else would i write these scholarly, technical research papers without wikipedia? just kidding, Dr. Bowers :)

a random international, cross-cultural thought... globalism

(This was originally posted to renown on December 15, 2009.)

I have so many random thoughts. I have them constantly. Seriously - the thoughts never stop. I don't write about a lot of them, but I think I am going to start more often.
That's really why I started this blog - not so much to always have these polished articles to dispense knowledge & ideas to the world [sarcasm], but as an outlet for me to think out loud! I'm going to start doing that more & this post is an example. They might make me look ignorant, but that's ok... it's my blog & I'm just thinking out loud. A lot of completely unprocessed, still-forming-in-my-brain-thoughts...

Here's my thought: If someone just wakes up 1 day and wants to go live in another country, THEY CAN'T.

isn't that weird?
Maybe it's not weird to you because that's just the world we've always known. Those geo-political boundaries are set in stone. But to me, it's really weird that if I just wanted to go live in another country... just for the heck of it... I couldn't. It wouldn't be that easy!
I would have to fill out all kinds of paperwork, make sure I have a passport and a visa if I'm staying forever... + probably a lot of other stuff I don't even know about. I couldn't just hop a plane & go. Why not?

*I haven't looked up all the rules or anything. I don't really know what the laws are going to & coming from all the other countries, so I admit, I am a little ignorant. But I figure that renown readers can probably tell me more about this than wikipedia, so go ahead and leave me a comment & explain all this if you want...

I guess it's all about keeping tabs on everyone? All our geo-political borders are so solid that countries don't want peeps from other nations slipping in unannounced. (And I am well aware that 9/11 changed the world, but these laws were the same even before that, right?)

To me it's just a weird world that we live in when we have to stay so divided. If I wanted to move to New Zealand tomorrow, or Egypt, or Germany, or Kazakstan, or Malawi, or Chile, or Indonesia, or Canada, or Mexico, or Kenya, or Ireland, or Poland, or anywhere else... I couldn't just "up & do it." That is SOOOO weird to me. What if I just wanted to move to Liberia, get an apartment, get a job, try the local restaurants, make some friends, and just live there for 5 years and then come back? not that simple.

Same with the U.S. When did it even start that if someone wanted to come live in America they couldn't just come move here? When did it become "illegal"? Maybe it has something to do with paying taxes? Or making sure we all get counted in a census? I don't know...

I just think it's weird in our world of 6 billion + that any person doesn't really have the freedom to live wherever they want.

Do YOU think it's weird too or am I just weird for thinking it?

"The Bachelorette" & "The Bachelor" are FAILURES

i know some people may not like this post, but seriously, could there be a worse idea than the TV shows "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette"?

oh yeah, just when we think we're out of the woods and the madness is over... "The Bachelor Pad" cranks up next week. awesome. i guess that is a way worse idea. maybe.

is it even possible to cause love and finding a mate even MORE unnatural and messed up than how they do it on "The Bachelor/Bachelorette"?

On The Bachelorette, a whole bunch of dudes fall in love with 1 girl - ALL AT THE SAME TIME. and the already very unnatural process is actually rushed because it's a competition with all the other guys... and they all live in the same house... and then they put it on TV for all of us to watch and be entertained by.

and this girl, Ashley, gives her heart away to multiple guys... at the SAME time. how do you not get confused? (i guess that Chris Harrison guy takes notes for her.) and then you have a deadline to pick 1 of them to marry. while breaking the rest of their hearts (and pieces of her own i might add). it seems to me that starting a relationship/marriage this way is a set up for disaster. i'll go a step further... it's obvious that it's a set up for disaster.

Both shows are a COMPLETE AND UTTER FAILURE! i'm not talking about how much money they've made, or how many people watch every week, or how many tweets go flying around, or how many people's DVRs are filled up with 5 HOURS worth of Bachelorette crap this past weekend (oh, mine definitely was) - between the 2 hour "guys tell all" ridiculousness, & then the actual show, & then the "after the final rose" thing. Which by the way is the 1st time in like 5 months that the engaged couple can even be together? REALLY? yeah, this all seems like the perfect way to start a relationship.

i'm saying that it's obvious that these shows are a COMPLETE AND UTTER FAILURE because no one is actually finding love, happiness, or a mate!
i haven't done the actual research on this... i just asked my wife. i don't feel like wasting time googling the actual numbers. but, from talking to Crystal it sounds like ONE COUPLE... let me repeat that 1 couple picked each other & actually ended up together and are still together out of 20 or 30something seasons. i'm not a math wiz, but that's a pretty low percentage.

the only other success is that guy Jason (who looks like Landon Donovan) who actually picked the dark headed chick who helped host Dick Clark's NYE deal, but then he dropped her for the blonde one from Michigan (Mindie or Molly or something?). and i think they're still married and together.

wow. so 2 out of maybe 30something. i would say that's pretty much a guarantee that you're not going to find your mate on this show. just sayin.

hopefully the shows producers would say the same and admit out loud that it's just a money making, entertainment/cultural obsession. i guess more power to them then. this is America. the bastion of capitalism. just go make money however you can. whatever the people flock to. forget the ethics of it. it's all about the benjamins.

i'm just thankful it's over and i hope no one actually has to watch that ridiculously stupid "Bachelor Pad" show. i'd rather take a beating with a brick stick. (ok, that's me being sarcastic... sort of.)

i guess i'm done venting now. anything YOU want to say about it?

Fiction has to make sense. Truth does not.

The International is actually a really good movie that came out a few years ago. and even if you don't like that kind of movie, Clive Owen happens to be the epitome of "cool" with that accent and chill composure and all. he's like a british Jack Bauer on Valium.

but that's not the point of today's post. there's a great moment in the movie when one of the OLD communist Generals with the IBBC says:
“Fiction has to make sense. Truth does not.”

He was pointing out the problem with lying and how hard it is to make fiction work... but truth... well that's easy. it's not hard to tell the truth. BUT it doesn't have to make sense.

that is true BIG TIME.

the Truth feels NO PRESSURE WHATSOEVER to make sense.

but we feel that pressure. we want the truth to make sense!

but i am becoming more and more comfortable with the fact that the truth often isn't made to make sense.
leave that to J.K. Rowling and Stephen King and all the awesome fiction writers of the world.

The Revolution - love wins.

there are a lot more of these bumper stickers floating around today than there were yesterday.
i hope the meaning takes our city and culture by storm.

we gave a bunch of these out to the students yesterday @ Ridge as we finished up a series called "The Revolution" with a day that revolved around the phrase LOVE WINS. (Thanks, Rob, for empowering us with that phrase & letting us borrow it.)

The series was all about the Kingdom of God and what Jesus had to say about it. That's all we've talked about for a month.

it's interesting that Jesus never actually defines the Kingdom of God. He never says "the Kingdom of God is..." He only says "the Kingdom of God is LIKE..." and then He tells a story.

we tried our best to explain the Kingdom of God in 1 sentence the 1st week. our meager attempt was that "God is making everything the way God wants it to be and He wants my help."

and then it's crazy that the Kingdom of God is so OPPOSITE. but then again, that's the essence of what a revolution is. because "normal is boring. opposite is revolutionary."

and if Jesus were here today He probably wouldn't call it "the Kingdom of God". He chose that phrase because that was the hot button of the context He was in. Not sure what we would call it today, but we went with The Revolution.

because that's what it is. a revolution.

and this revolution is not for some specific place or for some specific time or in 1 compartmentalized area of our lives. it is literally "Revolution Everywhere."

yesterday in Student Impact we were brave enough to try to sum up this Revolution in 2 simple words. "LOVE WINS."
because Jesus summed it all up with "love" (Matthew 22). Paul summed it all up with "love" (1 Corinthians 13). and everything we had talked about all month long that Jesus ever said about the Kingdom of God really comes down to LOVE. love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, turn the other cheek, give, etc... etc... it's all so opposite. more of the same doesn't win. evil for evil doesn't win... love wins.

can it be possible that the most humble, vulnerable, lowliest, and seemingly "weakest" position of LOVE can actually WIN in this world we live in?

tomorrow i want to dive into some more thoughts about what Paul had to say about love when he was trying to help this group of people in Corinth live their lives as a part of The Revolution.

they found a new planet

i enjoy reading GOOD magazine fairly regularly and recently i saw an article that caught my eye.

Scientists have found a new planet not all that far away. only like 20 light years & it appears it's the 1st outside of our solar system that can sustain life.

so... of course "we" (a.k.a. humans) are sending some messages over there in case there's anyone to receive them.

here were some of my favs:

Tamasin, Australia: "If you come to Earth look into: music, the beach, ice cream, hugs, family, love, dancing, cheese, trampolines, friendship, books and dreams. Just for a start."

Otto Koivuranta, Finland: "The lust for money will be the end of earth. I hope the same thing won't happen to you."

Sergio Camalich, Mexico: "What do you see when you look up into the sky? Do you feel small and lonely, just like us? From now on, I can assure you one thing: you are not alone. Be happy."

*this next one is possibly my #1 fav...
Dr. Okowon Falafalokoronko, Nigeria: "Sir. Let’s make a deal together. I have inheritance of $25m which I need help to release. Please send your interplanetary BSB a/c details. Thankyouplease."

Pi, Australia: "3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105820974"

Richard, Australia: "Please understand any messages from politicians (our leaders) do not represent the rest of us. This is an Earth tradition."

Maria, Australia: "Do gyms exist where you come from??? Is there such a thing as calorie counting and body image issues ? If not please come get me ASAP PPLLLEEAASSEE"

Admiral Ackbar, Yemen: "IT'S A TRAP!"

Erik K. Veland, Australia: "Apologies in advance for most of these messages. They are an example of our primitive humour."

which of these are your fav OR WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU SEND?

the fever (repost)

(This was originally posted June 28, 2010.)

do you know anyone with iPhone fever? i know some people who have come down with a severe case of it. the iPhone 4 is pretty awesome and i understand the "fever". there was the same craze for the 3GS & the iPhone before that, etc...

There is a "fever" that breaks out for all the latest and greatest new stuff in our culture. The "fever" is this overwhelming desire and perceived "need" to HAVE THAT THING. that thing that is so awesome and that thing that everyone else has.

i was thinking about this tonight. is this "fever" that comes on us something we were created with? did God make us that way? i know God made us with strong desires and He put in us an insatiable desire for satisfaction.

but where did this all out "fever" come from to have the latest and greatest thing?... whatever that thing may be this week. (because next week it will be something else new.)

i don't think we were created this way. i think it's from our culture. i think our culture tricks us and dupes us into this fever.

tonight i was asking myself if other cultures... non Western cultures experience the "fever" in their context? i don't think so. (i may very well be wrong though.) it doesn't seem like a cross-cultural fever to me. i think we have created "the fever" with our consumeristic, materialistic, gotta have it now, society here in Western culture.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
